Sloane Stephens v Garbine Muguruza Head to Head
They have met only twice on the tour and the tally presently stands at 1-1. They last met in the 2018 Miami Open, where Stephens won in straight sets.
Muguruza, On a Remarkable Streak
For the Spaniard, the French Open has always been one of those tournaments where she has excelled well, no matter what. It is where she rose to prominence – back to back quarterfinal runs in Paris and then winning the event in 2016.
Even last season when she had a bad spell on the tour, she made up for it to a certain extent by reaching the semifinal. This time around too, Muguruza is on course to repeat the same feat.
Her journey so far has been quite impeccable. After surviving an early scare against Taylor Townsend in the first round, she defeated Johanna Larsson in straight sets. Then, she met Elina Svitolina and as the underdog, trumped the number 9 seed 6-3, 6-3.
Earlier this year, Muguruza enjoyed a pretty similar run in Monterrey. She successfully defended her title there and retained her place in the top 20. That was one of her better runs in recent times although, few of her defeats did come against the top players.
Stephens, Set to Put up a Fight
Stephens didn’t have the best of the start to the season, but her form has certainly improved since the clay season began. She reached the quarterfinal in Charleston and in Madrid, she went as far as the semifinal.
Of course, hiring a new coach may have played a role in the recent improvement in her form, but she still needs to find her footing. It the Italian Open, Stephens lost to Johanna Konta in the opener.
Aiming to reach her first final since the WTA Finals last year, the American enjoyed a decent run. She moved past Misaki Doi and Sara Sorribes Tormo with ease although, she ran into problems against Polona Hercog. The match was dragged to three sets where Stephens had to work hard to subdue the Slovakian.
Last year, Stephens reached the final in Paris and that will certainly motivate her to bring her best game here.

Stephens will start this match as the favourite to win, but Muguruza is a strong opponent who will certainly make things challenging for her. Expect this one to go to three sets.
