Milos Raonic v Marton Fucsovics Head to Head
Raonic and Fucsovics will meet for the second time. Their first meeting was incidentally also in the Stuttgart Open where the Canadian won in straight sets.
Resurgent Raonic Is Back In The Groove
Milos Raonic has not played a lot of tennis during the last two years due to a number of major injuries which hampered his participation on tour. The Canadian recently returned to play on grass. It was his first appearance since the Miami Open where Raonic suffered a knee injury.
His impressive run to the quarterfinal will inspire him to do even better at Wimbledon. He lived dangerously in his opening two rounds but came out unscathed. The big serving Canadian scraped past Alexei Popyrin and Jo-Wilfried in three sets, needing a final set tiebreak to clinch victory in both matches.
The former World No.3 has now improved to 13-6 for the season with his best result coming at Indian Wells where he reached the semifinals. Raonic is playing in Stuttgart for the second straight year after losing out to Roger Federer in the final in 2018. He has arrived in Stuttgart this year in exact circumstances as last year. He was forced to pull out of the French Open last year (which has happened this year too) due to a troublesome knee injury.
Fucsovics Saved Match-Points To Book His Last Eight Place
Raonic’s next challenge will come in the shape of Hungarian Marton Fucsovics in the quarterfinal. Fucsovics saved three match-points to beat the fourth seed Nikoloz Basilashvili in three sets in over two hours.
That proved to be the 27-year-old’s best result at Mercedes Cup since he was knocked out by Raonic in the second round stage last season. Fucsovics is currently ranked at No.52 in the world which is a slight degrade from his highest ranking of No.31.
The tumble in the rankings were largely attributed to his inability to defend his title in Geneva a month ago after losing in the first round. Fucsovics reached the final in Sofia where he lost to Daniil Medvedev and his results ever since have been very inconsistent. After making back-to-back quarterfinals in Rotterdam and Dubai, he suffered opening round defeats in Indian Wells and Miami. The clay swing saw him make the last eight at the BMW Open before early defeats between Madrid and French Open kicked in.
Raonic v Fucsovics Predictions & Tips
Raonic won this match last year in the same tournament pretty handily. But this should be a lot more closer. Fucsovics has improved tremendously on the surface and Raonic has looked lethargic despite getting two impressive three set wins. While Fucsovics getting the win here might be a big ask especially when you consider the Canadian’s experience on grass, the Hungarian should at least make this more competitive than last year.
Tip: Over 2.5 sets in the match: 7/4 (888Sport)
