Borna Coric v Cristian Garin Head to Head
This will be a first-ever meeting between these two players.
Coric Impressed In A Comeback Win Over Fritz
Borna Coric fought impressively in downing American Taylor Fritz in three dramatic sets in the second round of the Libema Open to win 4-6 6-3 6-3 to make the last eight.
The Croat who is the reigning champion in Halle following his success over Roger Federer in 2018 elected to play the 250 event in the Netherlands in order to accumulate enough match fitness on grass before his title defence next week.
Grass is not Coric’s best surface but he is slowly catching up to the demands of playing on the faster court with minimal time to execute ground strokes. But that should worry the 22-year-old who is a real battler and will keeping chipping away regardless of where the match is going – something he did so well against Fritz, winning 83% first serve points and breaking serve 3 times.
Garin, The Chilean Who Will Just Not Go Away
Cristian Garin is having a year to remember on tour in 2019. And If anything is to go by from what he has accomplished this year, maybe we could be wrong to dismiss his chances of doing well on grass.
The talented young Chilean made his Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open earlier in January, then made his first ATP final in Sao Paulo in February losing to an inspired Guido Pella. Garin though went one better when he captured his first ATP tour-level title in Houston a month later.
His notable results on clay included a title win in Germany at the BMW Open. He is currently the highest ranked active Chilean on tour (No.32) following a breakthrough year on tour. Everything has clicked for him after struggling for years to make any serious impact on tour.
Coric v Garin Predictions & Tips
Coric is priced as the massive favorite here which is not disputable given his recent pedigree on grass. The Croat already boasts a win over Roger Federer on grass and he is becoming tough to beat on the surface as Fritz found out. Garin is having the year of his life, but this match with the second seed will be a step too far for him. The Chilean has looked suspect on his serve this week, and even though he got through his two matches in straight sets, the Croat should have an edge.
Tip: Coric to win: 4/5 (888Sport)
