Borna Coric v Jaume Munar Head to Head
The two men have played each other once before, and that was as recently as the start of April, in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters. Coric won that match on clay in three sets, after the first two sets went to tie breaks.
Coric, Defending Champion in Halle
Last year, at this same event, Coric achieved his first ATP 500 title, surprising the field to win on grass, beating the defending champion Roger Federer, and multiple winner here, in three sets.
Mainly known as a defensive baseliner, that win was unexpected and out of character for Coric’s other results on grass – he has only ever won one match at Wimbledon in four previous attempts.
Nevertheless, he showed glimpses of that form last week in s-Hertogenbosch. Entering the tournament as a wildcard, he saved match points in his quarter-final to reach the last four of the event, only to go down to the eventual winner Adrian Mannarino of France, in a third set tie-break.
That run equalled his best result of the year, which came in Dubai where Federer got his revenge for that defeat last year. He will be hoping for a good run here in Germany to set him up for another crack at improving his miserable record in Wimbledon in two weeks’ time.
Munar Favours Clay Courts
Like many Spanish players, Munar is most at home on a clay court, having won seven Futures and two Challenger Tour titles on that surface, the most recent of which came in Caltanisetta in Italy last year.
He has no form on grass, as can be seen from the fact that he only qualified for the main draw at Wimbledon for the first time last year, and exited immediately. And that lack of form on the surface was underlined by his first round defeat to Hungarian Marton Fucsovics in Stuttgart last week.
Coric v Munar Predictions & Tips
Coric is the odds-on favourite for this match at 4/17, whilst Munar is priced at 15/4 Whilst Coric is not a natural grass player, these odds are quite generous in his favourite, given that Munar has no form on the surface at all. Also given that the Croat did win their previous match on Munar’s preferred clay, it is hard to see beyond an easy win for Coric.
Tip: Coric to win in straight sets: 1/2 (888Sport)
