Sharapova, Back in the Fold
Maria Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam champion, has been out of action for a good six months owing to a persistent shoulder injury. It is the same problem that saw the veteran Russian miss the end of the previous season.
Sharapova has played in just three tournaments this year and holds a win-loss record of 6-2. But given that she is feeling good and fit, the wildcard entrant will fancy her chances in Mallorca and will look to improve those stats.
At the moment, the former US Open champion is experiencing a severe title drought. The last time she reached a final on the WTA Tour was back in the 2017 Tianjin Open. Since then, it has been a painfully long road for her to get back on the tour and reach her former self.
Kuzmova – A Young Slovak with a Lot of Fire
The 21-year-old Slovakian has had a fairly average season up until now. While she is yet to win a singles title, she has had a few good runs in Auckland and Dubai, where she reached the latter rounds.
Most recently, Kuzmova also reached the third round in the Madrid Open and the French Open. Presently ranked in mid-forties, Viktoria is a promising player who has been working really hard on the tour. Last week, she played in the WTA ‘S-Hertogenbosch, where she lost in the opener to Margarita Gasparyan.
Sharapova v Kuzmova Predictions & Tips
This one will be an interesting match to follow. Sharapova will be quite rusty and asking for a straight-set win is way too much. She will be cautious of her shoulder and will take care to not over exert herself. As for Kuzmova, she will look to capitalize on this rustiness and hope to deliver a massive upset right in the first round.
