Felix Auger-Aliassime v Grigor Dimitrov Head to Head
This will be a first meeting between these two players.
Auger-Aliassime Lost His Third Final In Succession
Felix Auger-Aliassime is coming to terms that life at the very top of the tennis mountain can be so unforgiving. The young Canadian continued his ascent on the ATP tour as he made his third final of his embryonic tennis career all which took place this year. However, once more, his inexperience failed him at a crucial moment as he lost Matteo Berrettini in the championship match at the Mercedes Cup.
Auger-Aliassime need not be too hard on himself as he is still learning the trade considering he reached the final in his first-ever professional grass court tournament. The 18-year-old has of course made two finals in 2019, one in Rio and the other in Lyon just prior to Roland Garros.
The teenager suffered a groin problem in that heartbreaking defeat to Benoit Paire in Lyon which forced him skip the French Open as a result. But he has well and truly overcome that problem and is enjoying immediate success on the lawns.
Dimitrov Relieved Grass Season Is Back
Given his natural athleticism and shot-making abilities, it is a real surprise that Grigor Dimitrov had never made it past the third round at the French Open. That trend continued as he lost to Stan Wawrinka at the same stage just a few weeks ago in Paris. Perhaps that defeat was his own downfall as he was involved in two back-to-back five-setters against Janko Tipsarevic and Marin Cilic respectively.
But for the Bulgarian, he will be so relieved to see the back of the clay court season for a year at least. Attention will be geared towards the grass starting at Queen’s Club where the 28-year-old is a former champion at the event.
Dimitrov usually plays his best tennis on grass as evidenced with a semifinal appearance at Wimbledon in 2014, the same year he won the title at Queen’s. However, the Bulgarian has not hit those heights ever since and he will now be under the guidance of Andre Agassi and Radek Stepanek as he steps efforts to return to his old form.
Auger-Aliassime v Dimitrov Predictions & Tips
Dimitrov is a slight favorite here due to his grass court prowess. But on current form he has not played even remotely close this year to what is expected of him. Auger-Aliassime has exceeded expectations as an 18-year-old, appearing in three finals in 2019. But the real worry for the Canadian is that he has played a lot of tennis this year and he is coming up against a fresh Dimitrov who will be itching to get his first win on grass.
Tip: Dimitrov to win: 5/4 (888Sport)
