Konta holds a 2-1 lead over the 22-year-old Latvian. She last defeated Ostapenko in the 2018 Rogers Cup.
Konta Makes a Winning Return
Konta started her campaign in the 2019 Nature Valley Classic on a brilliant note. She moved past Anett Kontaveit 6-4, 6-2, in an hour and 12 minutes. The Brit won an impressive 82% of her first service points. The number 7 seed never found herself on the break and broke Kontaveit’s service twice in each set.
The British No. 1 enjoyed a brilliant run in the clay swing, where she reached the final in the Italian Open and the semifinal in the French Open. Her form has improved significantly over the last few weeks as she is now a part of the top 20 once again.
Konta has a strong affinity towards the grass surface and following this superb start, she is slowly becoming the player to beat in Birmingham.
Ostapenko Seeking a Resurgence
Former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko has had a pretty disappointing season so far. With a win-loss record of 8-15, her form has certainly taken a dire hit.
To put things in perspective, in her last five WTA events, she has made it past the first round only once. That win came in Madrid, where she defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova but ultimately succumbed to Kiki Bertens.
In Birmingham, she defeated the young Polish Iga Swiatek 6-0, 6-2, in what was one of her better performances this season. Ostapenko is certainly a capable player, having made it to the semifinal in Wimbledon last year. Despite her recent struggles, she is more than capable of putting up a good fight.

Konta will start this match as the odds-on favourite and given her recent form, she should be able to win this one comfortably. As talented as Ostapenko may be, this is Konta’s home turf and she has been on a phenomenal roll of late. It is hard to imagine the Latvian pull off a massive stage this early in the event.
