Dominic Thiem v Sam Querrey Head to Head
Thiem and Querrey have met four times and it is the powerful Austrian who leads the head-to-head 3-1. On hard courts Thiem leads 2-1. This will be their first meeting on grass.
Thiem Retired In Last Year’s Wimbledon Opener
Dominic Thiem confessed of the mistakes he did during the 2018 season and one of them was his grueling schedule. The Austrian came off his first ever Grand Slam final appearance at last year’s French Open and quickly jumped at the chance to compete on the lawns in just under two weeks. He was beaten in the second round in Halle in 2018 to Yuichi Sugita and his Wimbledon participation was a horror show.
Thiem fell to the man whose retirement is imminent – Marcos Baghdatis – in the first round at SW19. He trailed by two sets and a break in the third when he retired. This time though, the 25-year-old has taken a precautionary rest after playing three long matches in consecutive days at the 2019 French Open. Once more Thiem made the final in Paris and he has decided to give his body plenty of rest.
The transition to grass can be quite a tricky proposition for the ardent clay lovers including Dominic Thiem who takes time to measure his ground strokes on the slower surface. However, the World No.4 has an all-court game which suits his playing style even on the faster courts too. Thiem has won a grass court title before at the Stuttgart Open in 2016 beating Roger Federer en route to the final and made the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2017.
He will need to find his groove very quickly in what looks to be a very tough opening round.
Querrey Lost An All-American Eastbourne Final
Sam Querrey made his first final in 16 months at the Eastbourne International but fell short to win his 11th career ATP title as he lost to fellow American Taylor Fritz. It is still an impressive return to action for the 31-year-old who had missed the last 11 weeks due to an abdominal injury.
Querrey was thrilled to make the final as he competed for the first time since reaching the semifinals in Houston in April. He got through a very tough draw beating the likes of Mikhail Kukushkin, Dusan Lajovic and Fernando Verdasco in straight sets. He produced a fantastic display of serving in the semis to take out Italian Thomas Fabbiano in three sets.
The American has now played four finals on grass with his lone title coming at Queens in 2010. Querrey is a former Wimbledon semifinalist (2017) and he peaked at World No.11 at the start of 2018.
Thiem v Querrey Predictions & Tips
Thiem has been handed a very tough opening round match. Querrey will play in his second tournament since April but he is still a threat especially on grass where his booming first serve and forehand can earn him cheap points with little fuss. The Austrian though could benefit greatly from a precautionary rest in the build-up to Wimbledon – something he failed to do last year – and he should have the edge here.
