Novak Djokovic v Philipp Kohlschreiber Head to Head

The players have met 12 times on the ATP circuit, with Djokovic leading the head-to-head 10-2. Interestingly, the players have met three times this year already. While Kohlschreiber won at Indian Wells, Djokovic won at Monte Carlo and Rome regaining momentum of the match-up.

Djokovic Begins Defense of Wimbledon Title

World number one and defending champion Novak Djokovic begins proceedings on Center Court at Wimbledon, against Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Djokovic is in search for a fifth Wimbledon and a 16th Grand Slam title. The Serb will have fond memories of winning the Wimbledon title last year, which is where he announced his comeback, after a difficult two years, with indifferent form and injuries. Djokovic has since gone on to win the US Open and Australian Open and fell short in the French Open semi-finals.

2019 has been a somewhat off and on year for the world number one since winning the Australian Open. Disappointing performances at the Sunshine Masters, and Monte Carlo were atoned with more disciplined showings at Madrid and Rome. But, he will consider a semi-final loss at the French Open to Dominic Thiem, to be somewhat below his typical lofty standards.

Djokovic has not featured at any of the grass court events prior to Wimbledon, something that he did in both 2017 (Eastbourne) and 2018 (Queens Club). He has attributed this to feeling confident and in form this year around, ahead of the second half of the tennis calendar.

Can Kohlschreiber Beat Djokovic On the Big Stage?

German Phillip Kohlschreiber, although 35 years of age now, has been consistent on the tour for years on end. Currently ranked number 57 on the tour, he has been ranked as high as number 16. The German has been a challenging opponent for all throughout his career.

After an injury plagued 2017, Kohlschreiber made a revival of sorts in 2018, finishing runner-up to Alexander Zverev in Munich and making the quarterfinals at the Indian Wells Masters and the fourth round of the US Open. The German made the semifinals at the ATP 250 in Auckland prior to the Australian Open, but had a mixed year since.

The biggest high point of his year was a straight set win against Novak Djokovic 6-4,6-4 at the Indian Wells ATP 1000 Masters event.

He will be disappointed with his warm-up on grass with early losses at both Stuttgart and Halle in the weeks prior to the Grand Slam.

Despite being a consistent name on the tour, his best grand slam performance has only been a quarter-final appearance, incidentally at Wimbledon too, in 2012. With a gritty approach, strong return and good court coverage, Kohlschreiber is the kind of player that cannot be ruled out on any surface by any opponent.

Djokovic v Kohlschreiber Predictions & Tips

The German veteran has been on the circuit for a long time and definitely has the skills to trouble the best in the world as he has shown on several occasions. However, with disappointing performances in the run-up to Wimbledon at both Stuttgart and Halle, Kohlschreiber will be coming into Wimbledon without much confidence on grass. He is up against someone who has seen it and done it all before- Centre Court, Wimbledon, Day 1, opening match. One can never discount Kohlschreiber but it is hard to see him cause much trouble to Djokovic on this occasion. Expect a routine straight set win for the defending champion to kick off proceedings.

Tip: Djokovic to win 3-0: 1/2 (888Sport)
