Angelique Kerber v Lauren Davis Head to Head
In their one and only meeting in the 2011 US Open, Kerber defeated Davis 7-6(3), 6-3.
Kerber Starts her Title Defence
In her opening match at the SW 19, Kerber defeated her compatriot Tatjana Maria with 6-4, 6-3, in an hour and 22 minutes. Despite a positive result, it wasn’t a convincing performance by the German that saw her win mere 64% of her first service points and commit 19 unforced errors. Plus, her service was broken four times by the unseeded German in the match.
Nonetheless, Kerber has a good connection with the grass surface, having reached the final in Wimbledon on two instances. Furthermore, just last week in Eastbourne, the number five seed reached the final before succumbing to Karolina Pliskova. Additionally, she was a semifinalist in Mallorca too.
Currently ranked World No. 5, her form has dipped marginally this season, especially on the clay courts. Her hard swing went very well, as she was more or less consistent and also was the runner-up in the Indian Wells Open.
Davis Makes Most of her Luck
Originally starting as a qualifier in London, Lauren Davis lost her final round of the qualifying fixtures to Kristie Ahn in straight sets. But by the virtue of something known as ‘Lucky Loser,’ Davis replaced a player in the main draw and got herself a ticket to the SW19.
She made the most of this second chance, dispatching Kateryna Kozlova of Ukraine in the opener with 6-3, 6-2. She dished out 21 winners in comparison to Kozlova’s 8 although, she committed an equal number of unforced errors. On the bright side, Davis has assured herself of good prize money, irrespective of the result.
World No. 95 has also played in quite a few ITF events this season, where she had a lot more luck. Lauren was the runner-up in Dothan and later the winner in Bonita Springs. As for her last grass event, it was in Birmingham where she moved past the qualifiers but lost to Qiang Wang in the first round.
