Daniil Medvedev v David Goffin Head to Head
The two men have played each other once before, in the third round of the Australian Open earlier this year with Medvedev winning on that occasion in straight sets.
Medvedev, Resisted Teenage Challenge of Popyrin
The 23-year old Russian got his own Wimbledon campaign off to a gentle start with a match over the lowly ranked Italian Paolo Lorenzi, winning in straight sets without always being totally convincing.
However, he was given a much sterner test in his second round encounter with Australian teenager, Alexei Popyrin, with the 19-year old taking the first set before Medvedev found his stride and won the next three.
Key to his victory was his superior service, particularly when it came to second points and his greater efficiency in breaking – he converted five out of the thirteen opportunities he was presented on the Popyrin serve.
This is his second successive year in the third round, but he can start to dream of going much further. With the likes of Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas already out of the tournament, there is an opportunity for somebody to make a name for themselves, and it could be Medvedev.
Goffin, Comfortable Passage to Date
Goffin has progressed through to the third round with a minimum of fuss and comparatively little effort. First he beat the world number 93, Bradley Klahn of the USA, and then followed that up with another straightforward victory, this time disposing of the challenge of the experienced Frenchman Jeremy Chardy for the loss of just nine games.
The Belgian’s previous best performance at Wimbledon came in 2015 and 2016 when he reached the fourth round, and the way that the draw is now opening-up, he will realise that, if he can get past Medvedev, then a first quarter-final at the All-England Club is a distinct possibility.
Medvedev v Goffin Predictions & Tips
Medvedev is the favourite to win this match at 13/17, whilst Goffin is priced at 6/5. The Russian has not played consistently well in the tournament to date, whilst Goffin has breezed past his first two opponents, but the Russian should still prevail, although it could be a close match.
Tip: Medvedev to win in four sets: 7/2 (888Sport)
