Elina Svitolina v Maria Sakkari Head to Head
This is the first meeting between the two players on the tour.
Luck Favours Svitolina in London
Number 8 seed Elina Svitolina had an easy start to her week in SW19, defeating Daria Gavrilova 7-5, 6-0. In the second round, she faced a lot of difficulties as she met the Russian prodigy Margarita Gasparyan.
Losing the first 7-5, Svitolina moved on to stage a comeback in the second set, winning two breakpoints. At 6-5 with the Ukrainian serving for the set, Gasparyan succumbed to injury and was forced to retire from the match. That gave Svitolina an easy walkover into the third round.
This has been her best performance on grass this season, given that she lost in the opening rounds in Eastbourne and Birmingham. Ordinarily, this would be quite surprising but then, she has been in this kind of a rut for quite some time now.
Even on clay, she lost her first-round matches in Madrid and Rome before finding some reprieve through a third-round in the French Open. There has been a gradual decline in Svitolina’s form, given that she started with superb runs in hard-court tournaments this year.
Sakkari Looking Clinical
Sakkari’s performance in London so far has been really impressive, as she moved past the likes of Bernarda Pera and Marie Bouzkova, without dropping a set.
The young Greek was particularly impressive against Bouzkova as she defeated her 6-4, 6-1, in an hour and seven minutes. With a 74% first-service win rate and 100% breakpoint conversion rate, Sakkari marched to a very comfortable victory.
Unlike Svitolina, her grass swing resulted in a couple of victories. In Nottingham, she reached the quarterfinal and in Eastbourne, she reached the second round. However, Sakkari has already proven herself to be quite a player this season, having won the WTA Rabat and making it to the semifinal in the Italian Open.
Svitolina v Sakkari Predictions & Tips
This season, Sakkari has defeated a couple of formidable, top 10 players like Kiki Bertens and Petra Kvitova. Going by that, there is no reason why she can’t upset Svitolina too, especially considering her form in recent weeks. Expect three sets in the match that can very well go either way.
