Dan Evans v Joao Sousa Head to Head
The two men have never played each other once before. This will be the first meeting between the Britain, ranked 61 in the world, and the Portuguese player, who currently stands 8 places lower on the ATP list.
Evans Carrying Home Hopes
With Andy Murray only playing the doubles events this year, and with Kyle Edmond and Cameron Norrie already knocked out, Evans is left to carry British hopes in the men’s event.
So far, he has not let his country down. First, he disposed of the Argentine Federico Delbonis in straight sets, and did the same against the power of the Georgian, and number eighteen seed Nikoloz Basilashvili. Now he finds himself in the third round at Wimbledon for the second time in his career, and may feel he will never have a better chance of going further.
Since returning from his one year ban from the sport for taking cocaine which ended in April 2018, Evans seems determined to put his chequered past behind him. He has been in five Challenger finals since his return, and won three of them, including the Wimbledon warm-up events this year in Surbiton and Nottingham.
That form has been reflected in the rankings – beginning this year outside the top 100, he may break into the world’s top 50 if his progress here continues.
Sousa, the Conqueror of Cilic
Sousa achieved one of his best ever results on grass in the second round by beating the 2017 Wimbledon finalist, and number 13 seed, Marin Cilic of Croatia in straight sets. That built on his first round victory over the British wildcard Paul Jubb, ensuring that he reached the last thirty-two at Wimbledon for the second time.
That is already a considerable improvement over the past two years when he was knocked out in the first round, but now he faces a British opponent on Number One Court on the first Saturday in Wimbledon, knowing that the crowd will all be against him.
It could be an intimidating experience for the Portuguese number one.
Evans v Sousa Predictions & Tips
Evans is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 5/11, whilst Sousa is priced at 2/1. Evans is playing on his favourite surface in front of his home fans, and is looking for his maiden fourth round appearance at Wimbledon. Sousa has played well all week, especially when beating Cilic, but Evans may just want the victory more.
Tip: Evans to win in four sets: 3/1 (888Sport)
