Laslo Djere v Leonardo Mayer Head to Head

Djere and Mayer have met once on tour. Their match was at the 2018 US Open where the Serb triumphed after Mayer retired hurt.

Djere Seeking A Second Career Title On Clay

Laslo Djere begun his Croatian Open campaign with a grueling three set match against former finalist at the event Paolo Lorenzi. Despite trailing by a break in third set, Djere erased the Italian’s resistance and reeled off five straight games to take a commanding lead in the contest. The Serb has now triumphed in 16 matches on clay this year.

He claimed his maiden ATP tour-level title at the Rio Open in February, beating Dominic Thiem in the first round and then Felix Auger-Aliassime in an emotional final. The 24-year-old has also made semifinals in Sao Paulo and Budapest, and in fairness, this has turned out to be his best year on tour.

Djere rose from outside the top-90 at the start of the year to a career-high ranking of 29th at the end of April. He has fallen a few spots (No. 32 at the moment) after a terrible grass-court season in which he picked up a solitary win at Wimbledon in the opening round.

Mayer, Like Djere, Loves Clay

Leonardo Mayer, like most South American players, is a quintessential baseliner on the red dirt. The Argentinian has picked up his two career ATP titles on the clay-courts of Hamburg, but his record on clay, especially in 2019, was not the best.

He played dismally during the South American clay-court swing in February, going 2-4 between Cordoba, Buenos Aires, Rio and Sao Paulo. His form leading up to the French Open was also cause for concern as he went 2-3 in main draw matches during the European clay swing.

Mayer came into Roland Garros this year without a main draw win at the tournament since 2015.  He did snap a three-match losing streak and in the process equaled his career-best appearance in a Grand Slam when he went all the way to book a fourth round meeting with Roger Federer.

Djere v Mayer Predictions & Tips

This is a 50-50 match-up which will likely be decided by a few points. Mayer is naturally a better clay-court player than Djere, but the Serb has realigned his game and taken it to new levels in 2019. Djere has put himself in prime position to win the 500s and 250s tournaments. Mayer has the edge on big match experience, but Djere will push him here.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 11/8 (888Sport)
