Fabio Fognini v Julian Lenz Head to Head
Fognini will meet Julian Lenz for the first time on tour.
Fognini Retired Injured Last Week
Fabio Fognini is entering the German Open this week under a bit of an injury cloud, having retired in his opening round match in Umag last week to fellow countryman Stefano Travaglia. Fognini has enjoyed significant clay-court success in 2019 when he sensationally won the Monte Carlo Masters in April.
The first quarter of the year saw two sides of Fognini. The Italian struggled dearly in opening months of the season as he stuttered to a 4-8 record before he turned around his fortunes spectacularly at the Principality. That result culminated in his rise into the world’s top-10.
He is yet to hit those heights, but he has at least been a lot steadier than he was at the start of the season. He reached the Round of 16 in both Madrid and Rome, and was then stopped in the fourth round by Alexander Zverev at the French Open. That result at Roland Garros was good enough to lift Fognini into the top ten for the first time in his career, becoming the oldest debutante in the top-10.
Fognini has been a constant feature in Hamburg over the years. He won the title here six years ago when he defeated Federico Delbonis in the final, and he contested the championship match in 2015, losing to Rafael Nadal. Given his injury struggles, Fognini will be delighted to open proceedings against a man he may have never heard of.
Lenz Out To Make A Statement
Julian Lenz is a relatively unknown German tennis player currently ranked at No.374 in the world. Lenz managed to attain his first main draw appearance on tour for the first time in his career.
The 26-year-old has largely played college tennis at Baylor University and his only notable success was in winning the junior doubles title at the US Open in 2011.
Lenz will cause a major upset of epic proportions if he can upset the World No.10 Fabio Fognini on Tuesday in what will surely rank as the finest result of his career.
Fognini v Lenz Predictions & Tips
Fognini will start as favorite here and he should have no trouble whatsover in advancing into the second round. The odds-makers have been a bit generous in opening up Fognini at 3/8 for the win. That is possibly due to his recent injury struggles in Umag. The Italian may not be at 100% physically, but he should sail smoothly against a player who is very much a rookie at this level.
Tip: Fognini in straight sets: 4/5 (888Sport)
