Alexander Zverev v Nikoloz Basilashvili Head To Head
The two players have met once on the ATP tour, with Zverev winning in straight sets last year at the ATP Masters 100 in Shanghai.
Zverev Having to Dig Deep in Quarter-Finals
After being the center of much off-court attention with his relationship with coach Ivan Lendl, Alexander Zverev displayed a gutsy performance digging deep to win his quarter- final against Serbian Filip Krajinovic. Krajinovic led 6-2, 5-2 at one point in time but the German came back for an impressive 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory, sealing a spot in the semi-finals.
Zverev had displayed a strong all round game in defeating Nicolas Jarry and Federico Delbonis in straight sets en route the quarter-finals and with Dominic Thiem now out of the tournament, is the highest remaining seed and front-runner for a title run this weekend.
The Hamburg local has had a difficult 2019 with off-court troubles impacting his performance, with a string of early disappointing losses. However, his performance on clay has been considerably better this year than other surfaces, with him winning the ATP 250 at Geneva and a French Open quarter finals loss to world number one Novak Djokovic.
Another title to the collection this weekend will go a long way in mitigating any off-court challenges.
Defending Champion Basilashvili in Strong Form
Hard hitting Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili had a breakthrough 2018 winning two titles, both ATP 500s at Hamburg and Beijing, and in turn become the first ever Georgian player to win an ATP title. He broke into the top 20 of the ATP rankings by year-end 2018 and is currently ranked a career high world number 16.
Basilashvili was a qualifier at the Hamburg Open last year and went on to win the tournament, and is definitely familiar with the crowds, courts and conditions.
The Georgian has been in impressive form this week with wins against Bolivian Hugo Dellien and Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Londero before dispatching French veteran Jeremy Chardy 6-3,6-3 in the quarter-finals.
Alexander Zverev v Nikoloz Basilashvili Predictions & Tips
Both players have looked strong this tournament. Basilashvili is the defending champion and familiar with the conditions and courts. Zverev on the other hand is the home boy and crowd favorite in the contest.
There is not much to choose between both players. With the crowd on his side, and confidence presumably high after digging deep in the quarter finals, the German may start as a slight favorite.
It will boil down to who plays the key points better. Expect Zverev to clinch a spot in the finals with a close three set win.
Tip: Zverev to win: 5/6 (888Sport)
