Venus Williams v Bethanie Mattek-Sands Head to Head
Venus presently holds a formidable 4-0 lead over her compatriot although, they last met in the US Open 2012. The two players have clearly been through a lot on the circuit and this time around, things may very well be different.
Williams’ Continued Struggles with Form
The seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus has had a season to forget so far. Struggling with form and consistency, she has moved on to deliver some of her worst professional results in quite some time.
To begin with, she hasn’t been that active on the tour and has participated mainly in the big-ticket events. There, Williams failed to put on a good show with her best run coming in the Indian Wells, where she was a quarterfinalist.
Her tryst with inconsistency continued through the season with bouts of losses to several big guns like Elina Svitolina, Johanna Konta, and Simona Halep. Or to put it differently, Williams never managed to get past the early rounds as she ran into these opponents quite soon.
However, in her last showing in Wimbledon, she fell to the teen sensation Cori Gauff, right in the opener in straight sets. Presently, her tally stands at 14-8.
As for her history in the Silicon Valley Classic, she has reached the final here more than a few times, with her first one coming as far as 1998 – more than 20 years ago.
Mattek-Sands, in with a Wildcard
Mattek-Sands – the winner of 26 doubles titles, has been handed a wildcard into the main draw in San Jose. However, with her first round opponent being Venus herself, it is hard to imagine how far she can go.
To make things more interesting, this singles match is set to be her first singles appearance on the tour since the Australian Open this season. Bethanie has been struggling with a knee injury for the last couple of seasons and actually took some time off earlier this year to undergo a surgery.
It was a success, as the 34-year-old American reached the doubles final in Eastbourne with Kirsten Flipkens and subsequently rediscovered her love for tennis. She has been spending a lot of time on the courts and it will be interesting to see how she fares in this high-octane encounter.
Williams v Mattek-Sands Prediction & Tips
By all means, Venus should get this win comfortably. But if history has shown us anything, it may not be an easy feat for her. Mattek-Sands, while being a quiet singles player, has the skillset to take out her adversary, especially considering that she hasn’t been in that great of a form of late.
Tip: Over 16.5 games in the match. (888Sport)
