John Isner v Benoit Paire Head to Head
In their only previous meeting that came in 2010 in Montpellier, Isner was a comfortable, straight-set winner over his opponent. It was a first round match there.
Isner Hoping to Build on Hurkacz Win
Isner was coming back to where it had all begun for him and he smashed 14 aces in a comfortable 6-4, 6-4 win over Hubert Hurkacz in the second round. He had a first round bye.
In doing so, Isner faced six break points, including four in the very first game he served, but was never broken in his match against the Pole. This was followed by two more such break points in the second game but once he had shrugged them to level the set at 2-2 there was no looking back.
A break of serve in the ninth game of the first set helped Isner serve out the set before he got another break early in the second. That was followed by Isner showing his serving mojo as won 16 points out of a possible next 19 on serve to wrap up the encounter.

The Frenchman has already won two titles this year including one at Marrakech and another at Lyon. More vitally, Paire showed great versatility in making it to the fourth round of Wimbledon much like he had done at the French Open earlier – that made him one of only five players this year to achieve that feat.
An opening defeat at Hamburg shouldn’t dent his confidence too much coming into this tournament, with a first round bye followed by a hard-fought win over Marc Polmans getting him this far. However, that grinding win against Polmans could be an indicator that adjusting to hard court tennis might not be as easy as that switch to grass from clay.
Paire had last played on hard court at Miami, more than four months earlier and has a 3-6 win-loss record on that surface. Will need a lot to remedy that against a player like Isner.

Isner is 12/1 to win the title and will start off as an odds on favourite to get the better of Paire in this third round encounter. Straight set win for Isner yet again in this one.
