Gael Monfils v Peter Polansky Head to Head
This will be the very first time that Monfils and Polansky will be facing off at this level.
Monfils Aiming to Build on His Ranking
Having begun the previous year ranked 46th in the world, the former world number six has shown a steady ascension up the charts. He had risen to 29th at the end of 2018 and then as high as 15th in the world in mid-2019. Now ranked 19th, Monfils will hope to build on the form he has shown on hard courts this season, form that includes a title earlier this year at Rotterdam.
That said, the Frenchman is coming off some rotten grass court showing, losing three of the four matches he played on that surface. This included a first round loss at Wimbledon and it made it the first time in his career since 2005 that Monfils had lost more than he won on grass when he had played at least two matches.
Monfils hadn’t participated in this competition last year and his best showing here came as long back as in 2011 when he made the quarter-final. The good news for Monfils is with no points to defend, he can add to his tally and claw back to his recent best of world number 15 on the rankings chart with some good performances here.

Polansky Hoping to Make a Match
Canadian Polansky’s on a wild-card to feature in this competition because at 163rd in the world, he would have struggled to make it to the qualifiers to enter the main draw. With a career best ranking of 110th in his career, Polansky’s generally had an underwhelming singles career, and with a 17-25 win-loss record this season, his ranking has plummetted from 118th at the start of the season to 163 now.
Making it worse for Polansky is most of these wins have come at Challenger events and even ATP tournaments where he has managed to make the qualifiers, he hasn’t survived more than a round. The only exception to this was the Australian Open where he won two qualifiers and then lost the third, failing to qualify for the competition.
Beating Monfils might be a bridge too far for the Canadian.
