Rafael Nadal v Dan Evans Head to Head
The two players have never met before and this will be their first ever meeting on the tour.
Nadal Begins Defense of Rogers Cup
World number two and number one seed Rafael Nadal is the defending champion at the Rogers Cup in Montreal having won the Toronto version last year. The Spaniard has won the Rogers Cup four times and will be looking for his fifth title in Canada.
Despite having repeated injuries since the end of last year, Nadal has returned stronger than before, ending as a runner-up at the Australian Open, winning the French Open and being a Wimbledon semi-finalist. As the season moves well into the second half, the transition to the hard courts have posed their fair challenges to the world number two from a fitness and injury perspective.
Whereas Nadal has been a US Open champion three times this decade, it is also during this swing that he has had to deal with physical issues, after the wear and tear of the season. However, he seems to have managed his workload better in recent years and arrives in Canada reportedly free of any injury concerns.
Evans Comeback Year Looking For More Impetus
British player Daniel Evans, started the year ranked outside the top 500 on the ATP circuit, after a career-high number 41 ranking in 2017.
Once looked upon as being “extremely talented and promising”, and winning the LTA Male Junior Player of the Year in 2008, Evans’ career ran into disciplinary issues, largely due to his off-court behavior. The most notable incident being his 12 month ban, in April 2017, after testing positive for cocaine. Such recurring incidents got him the unwanted nickname of the “Bad Boy of British Tennis”
Evans’ has been part of successful British Davis Cup teams and is well remembered for his 2nd round victory against Marin Cilic in the 2017 Australian Open. Evans made the round of 16 that year, his best Grand Slam result till date.
2019 has been a relatively consistent season for the Briton with him losing the final at the Delray Beach Open ATP 250 to Romanian Radu Albot after having championship points. He also made the third round at Wimbledon and has done well to make the rounds of 16 and 32 at other ATP tournaments this year. All of these have brought him back to being ranked number 51 in the world currently.
Nadal v Evans Predictions & Tips
Although Nadal starts as a strong favorite in this match, Evans is extremely talented and is someone who hits the ball out of the middle of the racket with immense ease. Evans will be confident after his first round win against Australian sensation Alex de Minaur. An interesting match on the cards that should have some good rallies; expect Nadal to win in straight sets though.
Tip: Nadal to win in straight sets: 2/5 (888Sport)
