Marin Cilic v John Millman Head to Head

Cilic and Millman have met once before this in 2015 at Shenzhen, with the Croat needing three sets to get the better of his Aussie opponent.

Cilic’s Underwhelming Season Needs a Turnaround

Only in two tournaments this year has Cilic, the 2014 US Open champion, been able to win three matches in a row. The first came at the Australian Open where he made it through to the fourth round before losing to Roberto Bautista-Agut and then at the Madrid Masters where he had to withdraw from his quarter-final against Novak Djokovic.

However, these wins have been interspersed with opening or second round defeats, most notably at the two other Grand Slams this year. At the French Open he went down to the fading star Grigor Dimitrov while Wimbledon saw him lose to Joao Sousa, both of which came in the second round.

The last year in which Cilic didn’t win a single title was way back in 2007; this year forget winning one, he hasn’t managed past the quarter-final of any tournament. He has begun this year’s Rogers Cup with a straight-set win over Blaz Klahn but even that needed a second set tie-breaker. Tough times ahead for him.

Qualifier Millman Showing Recent Sparkle

Having fallen to 65th in the world, the Australian 30-year-old began the year well with a quarter-final appearance at the Sydney International competition but that has been followed by a string of lacklustre showing.

There was another last-eight stage match at Acapulco but since then, Millman has lost in the first round at Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, Rome, Stuttgart, Halle, Eastbourne and Los Cabos – a horrible string of form.

The recent sparkle, as the subheading suggests, refers, however to his showing at Wimbledon where the Aussie managed to carve out back to back straight-set wins to reach the third round. Sam Querrey took him out in two tie-breakers in that match.

And then here, at Montreal, Millman has won his first qualifier and then had to make the main draw as a Lucky Loser before defeating Feliciano Lopez in his opener. Can he now get the better of his more pedigreed, but off-colour opponent?

Cilic v Millman Predictions & Tips

Millman’s recent sparkle and Cilic’s overwhelming struggles shouldn’t take away from the Croat win but we might see a three-setter here.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 9/5 (888Sport)
