Dominic Thiem v Marin Cilic Head to Head

This will be a second ever meeting on tour between Thiem and Cilic. The Austrian won their only meeting to date at the Brisbane International in 2016.

Thiem Posted First Ever Win In Canada

It may come as a surprise to many, but Dominic Thiem picked up his first win at Rogers Cup at the 6th attempt in his second round victory over home favorite Denis Shapovalov. The powerful Austrian was playing in his first hard-court match since losing in the first round of the Miami Masters to Hubert Hurkacz in March.

Thiem is still a work-in-progress on hard-courts despite claiming the biggest title of his career on the surface after upsetting Roger Federer in the championship match in Indian Wells. Since making his debut at the Rogers Cup in 2014, the 25-year-old has lost in the opening round in his each of his last five visits – a stat Thiem himself reiterated as being a shocker.

The two-time French Open runner-up has been bumped to a number two seeding in Montreal this week thanks to Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer’s absences. Thiem has plenty of reason to feel confident about his chances of doing well this week after winning his third title of the year in Kitzbuhel last weekend.

Cilic Aiming For A Strong Showing This Week

Unlike Thiem, Marin Cilic has a decent record at the Canada Masters. The big hitting Croat has 10-9 win-loss record since making his debut in 2008 and made the quarterfinals last year. Cilic is one win away from getting back to the same stage after notching up two important wins against American Bradley Klahn and Australia’s John Millman respectively.

Cilic is finding his feet at the right time and that would be a welcome addition considering the difficult season he has had. He is only 13-11 for the season after reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open and suffering first round exits in four of the next five tournaments.

He made the quarterfinals in Washington last week, a sure sign he is making progress. Cilic has a healthy record during the North American hard-court swing after capturing two of the biggest prizes in tennis (a Grand Slam title at the 2014 US Open and the Cincinnati Masters in 2016).

Thiem v Cilic Predictions & Tips

Cilic should not be underestimated despite his woeful season. When he is on form he is such a lethal competitor. Unfortunately for the Croat, the good days have been far less on tour this year. Cilic though has a mighty chance against the erratic Austrian. Thiem has a shocking record in Canada and expect Cilic’s big hitting to down the number two seed.

Tip: Cilic to win: 11/10 (888Sport)
