Gael Monfils v Hubert Hurkacz Head to Head
This will be the first that Monfils and Hurkacz will go head to head against each other in an encounter.
Monfils’ Brilliant Hard-Court Record This Season
Ranked 20th in the world, Monfils didn’t have a great time on grass as he lost three of the four matches he played on it but a 9-2 win-loss record on hard court surfaces should help him immensely coming into the Rogers Cup. This includes a semi-final appearance at Dubai and quarter-finals at the Indian Wells Masters before he had to withdraw from that match before of an Achilles heel injury.
That put him out for a couple of months, which would have had a say on his momentum but Monfils did make the fourth round at the French Open before that grass-court swing.
At the Montreal Masters, Monfils was stretched to three sets by Canadian Peter Polansky before overcoming Ilya Ivashka 6-3, 7-6 in the second round. But the Frenchman had already said after his opening win he was still struggling with his fitness, with his ankle issues having yet to heal fully.
Would that be an issue against tougher opponents?
Hurkacz on His Favourite Surface This Season
The Pole is currently ranked 48th in the world, not too far from his career-best of 41st, and is coming off his best Grand Slam performance as well – having made it to the third round at the 2019 Wimbledon. However, most vitally, he made it to this third round at the Rogers Cup with the biggest upset of the tournament as he overcame Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets in his previous match.
This win comes on the back of another top 10 upset he had caused at the Miami Masters where he defeated Dominic Thiem, also in the second round. However, he was sent packing in the third round, a result he would like to avoid in this encounter.
Hurkacz’s best result this year also came on a hard court surface this year, as he defeated Kei Nishikori and Denis Shapovalov at the Indian Wells Masters to make it to the quarter-final. It needed Roger Federer to end his run at that tournament.
With such results under his belt, the Polish player will be in short supply of confidence for this one.

Despite the obvious discrepancy in their rankings – Monfils is 20th to Hurkacz’s 48th – it’s interesting to note that the Pole is a marginal favourite here with an offer of 4/5 for his win to 27/20 for a Monfils victory. Backing Hurkacz to get the better of Monfils in this one.
