Daniil Medvedev v Cristian Garin Head to Head

The two men have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the two 23-year olds.

Medvedev, Consistent Tournament Performer

Now in the world’s top ten, Medvedev is engaged in a private battle with his friend and compatriot Karen Khachanov to decide who will be the top ranked Russian player.

Medvedev has earned his status because of his continued consistency in tournaments – not only did he win his fourth career title in Sofia, but he has also featured in the finals in Brisbane and Barcelona this year.

In addition he also reached the semi-final in Monte Carlo, the first time that he had reached that stage in a Masters event. The next stage in his career is to make the latter stages of tournaments like the Rogers Cup and Grand Slams on a regular basis.

The beaten finalist in Washington last week, he has shown no signs this week so far that those exertions have taken any toll on him, beating Britain’s Kyle Edmund in straight sets in the second round on Wednesday for the loss of just three games to set-up the meeting with Garin.

Breakthrough Year for Chilean Garin

Garin began the year with a dismal record on the senior ATP tour, but he has more than made up for it since. The winner of the 2013 junior French Open reached his first final in Sao Paolo in March, only to lose to Guido Pella. A month later he went one better by winning the US men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston, and added a second ATP title at the Bavarian Championship in May.

He has not been able to maintain that level since and, after reaching the quarter-finals in s_Hertogenbosch, went on a terrible run that saw him lose in the first round in the next five tournaments he entered, including Wimbledon, and Los Cabos last week.

He would not have been in confident mood at the start of this week, but an opening round win over Laslo Dere of Serbia boosted his morale, and he will be feeling even better about himself after dumping the number 12 seed John Isner out of the tournament on Wednesday. Despite being predictably out-served by Isner, Garin was much more efficient on return, and converted two of the four break points he earned, which Isner could not match.

Medvedev v Garin Predictions & Tips

Medvedev is the heavy odds-on favourite to win this match at 2/11, whilst Garin is priced at 9/2. Garin’s confidence may have been boosted by the win over Isner, but this is not the sort of match Medvedev loses regularly, and it is hard to see beyond a Russian win.

Tip: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 8/15 (888Sport)
