Fabio Fognini v Adrian Mannarino Head to Head

The two men have played each other four times before, with two wins for Fognini sandwiched by two victories for Mannarino. Fognini won their first meeting on clay at Roland Garros in 2012, and their last encounter on the hard courts of Sydney last year. In between that came two victories for the French player – at the US Open in 2014, and at Indian Wells a year later.

Fognini, Mixed Year for Temperamental Italian

Fognini has had a mixed season. In May he achieved the greatest success of his career when he became the first Italian to win a Masters Series title in Monte Carlo. And, after reaching the 4th round at Roland Garros, he found himself ranked in the world’s top ten for the first time.

However, controversy is never far from the notoriously hot-headed Italian, and he was heavily fined after saying that Wimbledon should be blown up, after he was beaten at the all-England club by Tennys Sandgren.

Since then his results have been very mediocre. He lost early in Hamburg, and retired midway through his second round match in Umag, Croatia. He also failed to defend the title he won in Los Cabos in 2018 last week, beaten by Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals.

Despite that, he edged past Tommy Paul of the USA in the second round here on Wednesday in straight sets, out-serving his opponent and dominating on return of serve.

Mannarino Looking to Emulate His Best Masters’ Performance

It took 15 years on tour before June this year for 31 year old Frenchman Mannarino to win his first ATP senior title when he triumphed on the grass of s-Hertogenbosch. Aside from that, his best results in 2019 have come in doubles’ events – with his partner and compatriot Hugo Nys he reached the semi-finals in New York, and the quarters in Delray Beach.

Whilst, in general, he has a poor record in major events, it was in this same tournament two years ago that he had his best run in a Masters event, reaching the quarter-finals.

He will emulate that feat if he can beat Fognini on Thursday, and will be in good heart for the contest. Having beaten Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan comfortably in the first round, he followed that up by thrashing the number 11 seed, Borna Coric, losing just three games to the Croat in the entire match, outclassing his opponent both on serve and on the return.

Fognini v Mannarino Predictions & Tips

Fognini is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 10/13, whilst Mannarino is priced at 11/8. Mannarino will be brim full of confidence after overcoming Coric, but, if Fognini can control his emotions and fragile temperament, he should win this match, although it might take three sets.

Tip: Fognini to win in three sets: 3/1 (888Sport)
