There have been 11 matches played between Murray and Gasquet before this with their last encounter coming at the 2016 French Open. Murray leads 8-3 having won six matches in a row since the 2012 Rome Masters match which Gasquet had won.
Wild-card Murray Begins Second Innings
In a way this is the second coming of Murray in the world of singles tennis. Little around seven months ago, Murray had delivered a message that shook his fans; he could well be playing his last competition at the Australian Open. Having made it clear he wouldn’t directly play in the US Open singles tournament without having had an outing at a tournament before that, Murray looks to be progressing well at this stage. A win here will be both, a satisfying and an emotional feeling for the former world number one and three-time Grand Slam winner.

Gasquet’s Season of Struggles
11 wins and 10 defeats. That’s what Gasquet’s season looks like right now and this is after he began it late, playing his first tournament only in the month of May thanks to a hernia injury earlier this year.
It took the Frenchman four tournaments, including the French Open to win two matches in a row, achieving this at Hertogenbosch. He made it to the semi-final there, before losing to Jordan Thompson. Since then, another five tournaments elapsed which saw him crash out before winning back to back matches, losing in the first round at Wimbledon as well.
It was finally at the Montreal Masters that Gasquet got into his own – first beating Benoit Paire and then shocking Kei Nishikori in the second round. He went down in the third round to Roberto Bautista-Agut but not before giving the Spaniard bit of a fight.

It’s a tough one to call given the context and recent issues both players have faced and while Murray’s win will be a perfect fairy-tale return, it does seem like Gasquet should edge him out in this one.
