Fabio Fognini v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head
The pair have met once before in the Rogers Cup last year, with the Canadian winning in front of his home fans in straight sets.
Fognini, Rueing Missed Chance Against Nadal
Fognini became the first Italian to win a Masters 1000 title in May when he claimed victory in Monte Carlo, beating Rafael Nadal en route. And he had dreams of adding a second Masters title in Montreal last week to his CV, when he broke the Nadal serve twice in the first set of the quarter-final to take an early advantage.
However, that proved to be as good as it got for the Italian – Nadal found his rhythm and range, and Fognini went on to win just three more games in the match.
Still his run in Canada was something of a return to form for the Italian who, after reaching the last 16 in Roland Garros. was knocked out of Wimbledon in controversial fashion, lost easily in Hamburg, retired in the second round in Umag, and failed to successfully defend his title in Los Cabos.

Shapovalov, Continued Search for Consistency
Shapovalov is still only 20, a fact that is often forgotten given the length of time he has been playing already at the elite level.
That means that, like many young players, he struggles for consistency, and is capable of the very good and the very bad in the same match.
At his best, he is able to produce the sort of tennis that helped propel him to the semi-finals in Miami earlier this year. At his worst, however, he can go on the sort of five match losing streak that he had prior to the Rogers Cup last week. He was able to arrest that slide by beating Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the first round in Montreal, before going down valiantly in three sets to Dominic Thiem in the second.
Fognini v Shapovalov Predictions & Tips
Despite being the lower ranked and non-seeded player Shapovalov is actually the odds-on favourite for this match at 8/13, whilst Fognini is priced at 8/5. Perhaps these odds are influenced by their Rogers Cup match last year, because there is little in the Canadian’s recent form to support such optimism. Instead Fognini can be expected to overturn the odds to win.
Tip: Fognini to win in three sets: 22/5 (888Sport)
