Reilly Opelka v Borna Coric Head to Head
This will be a first meeting between Opelka and Coric.
Opelka Has Had A Season To Remember
After starting the year outside the top-100, American Reilly Opelka is occupying the dizzying heights of a top-50 players (currently at No.43) thanks to a tremendous season in which he claimed his maiden ATP tour title in New York in February, and recorded a big win at Wimbledon where he took out much-fancied Stan Wawrinka en route to the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time.
Opelka targeted a big summer on the North American hard-courts after his impressive success during the first quarter of the year. He reached the semifinals in Atlanta where he beat countryman John Isner for the third successive meeting en route.
The 21-year-old had a productive second half of the season in 2018 when he won 18 out of his last 22 matches on the Challenger tour (winning two titles and finishing runner-up in another two), so he will be keen to accumulate as many points on the ATP tour in 2019.
Coric’s Season Has Been Halted By Injuries
Borna Coric has failed to replicate his exploits from what was a career-best season in 2018 where he reached a career-high ranking of World No.12.
The Croat’s impressive performances which garnered him a terrific victory over Roger Federer in Halle final and a maiden Masters 1000 final showing in Shanghai last year almost earned him a place at the season-ending Nitto ATP finals.
Despite his inability to win a title in 2019, the number 12 seed has managed to string a few notable results. He reached the semifinals in Dubai and Den Bosch, and the quarterfinals in Miami, Monte Carlo and Budapest. The Croat has had his fair share of fitness and injury concerns as he pulled out of Wimbledon due to an abdominal injury.
It is hard to reiterate whether he has fully recovered because he lost so early in the two tournaments he has played in after the injury. Coric was beaten by Salvatore Caruso in the first round at his home country in Umag and then lost handily to Adrian Mannarino at the Rogers Cup.
Coric v Opelka Predictions & Tips
Opelka is slight favorite to win in this one especially given Coric’s worrying form. The Croat also does have a dismal record against the renowned big servers on tour. He has a 3-0 losing record against fellow Croat Ivo Karlovic and while he is tied at 1-1 with Isner, it is hard to see him scrape to a win against Opelka who has been one of ATP’s breakout stars in 2019.
Tip: Opelka to win: 4/6 (888Sport)
