Dominic Thiem v Richard Gasquet Head to Head
The two have played each other twice before, with Gasquet coming out on top both times. Both matches were played on indoor hard courts – at Basel in 2015, and then in Vienna two years later.
Thiem, Looking for Rhythm Ahead of Flushing Meadows
Runner-up at the French Open for the past two years, Thiem is primarily regarded as a clay court specialist – ten of his fourteen ATP career titles have been won on that surface. Yet he proved earlier this year that he can compete successfully on hard courts when he won the Indian Wells Masters, beating Roger Federer en route to the final.
That was one of three titles he has won this year – Barcelona and Kitzbuhel being the others – and he will be hoping for a good run in Cincinnati as he looks to find some form and rhythm ahead of the US Open. He reached the quarter-finals in Flushing Meadows last year, and will be hoping to do at least as well this time around.

Gasquet, Ruined Murray Comeback
33-year-old Gasquet is one of the most experienced players on the ATP tour, having been a pro since 2002. In his career he has won 15 senior titles, the last of which came in June of last year on the grass of s-Hertogenbosch.
However, injury forced him to miss France’s Davis Cup final with Croatia in November, and he had to sit out the first part of this season as he recovered from groin surgery in January. He made his competitive return at the Madrid Open, but has struggled to make major progress in tournaments, with a semi-final at s-Hertogenbosch again the best showing since his comeback.
Gasquet, despite those struggles had too much for the returning Andy Murray in his first round match here on Monday. The Scot, making his own comeback after career threatening hip injuries, provided some resistance, but Gasquet was fitter and more attuned to his own game, and won comfortably in straight sets.
Thiem v Gasquet Predictions & Tips
Thiem is the odds-on favourite to win this match. Gasquet has beaten the Austrian in both their two previous matches, but the men are at different stages of their relative career now, and Thiem, looking to warm-up for Flushing Meadows, will be keen to put his stamp on this event.
Tip: Thiem to win in straight sets: 5/8 (888Sport)
