Stan Wawrinka v Jannik Sinner Head to Head
The pair have never faced each other on the ATP Tour, and this will be the first meeting between the two.
Wawrinka: Looking to End an Inconsistent Year on a High
After winning a Grand Slam in each of the years from 2014 onward where he went on to beat the number one player in the finals, Wawrinka has had difficult couple of years in 2017 & 2018; a double knee operation meant that at a point in time he dropped to as low as 263 in the world ranking and it has been a long hard road for him to get back to the top.
It’s been a mixed season so far for Wawrinka. Some decent performances earlier in the year at Indoor hard courts and clay-court season with a strong run till quarter-finals at the French Open. He also had a couple of last eight appearances in Doha and Madrid as well as reached the finals at the Rotterdam open to get into the world top 20.
The second half of the season has been a rather disappointing one so far, losing to big-serving American Sam Querry in the second round at the Wimbledon was followed by an unspectacular hard court season with a 9-7 record so far.
Back to back second-round exits from the Montreal and Cincinnati masters hasn’t been ideal preparation going into the tournament but 2016 US Open Champion will be taking confidence from an impressive 40-12 lifetime record at the tournament.

Dangerous Sinner Has Nothing to Lose
Sinner’s rise in the last one year has been a meteoric one; he was ranked at 1159 at the start of August in 2018 whereas this year he goes in the main draw at the US Open as the world number 131. He also played his first-ever Masters at Rome earlier this year reaching the second round losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece.
He has come through three impressive victories in the qualifying stages and with a 10-2 record on Hard Courts, this season and a title at the Lexington Challenger the Italian will fancy his chances in this match. With a direct entry in the 2020 Australian Open in his sights and pressure firmly off his shoulders, the high flying 18-year-old will be hoping to make it tough for Wawrinka.
Stan Wawrinka v Jannik Sinner Predictions & Tips
The tie is not as straightforward as it looks on paper between a three-time Grand Slam champion versus an 18-year-old Grand Slam debutant who has come through qualifying rounds.
Wawrinka has endured an up and down season so far and is yet to hit his top form whereas Sinner comes in the match full of confidence with an impressive run in the second half of the season. Wawrinka will stick to his offensive baseline game, but Sinner does have a powerful double-handed backhand to and is taller and has a more potent serve then the Swiss.
An upset may be a little too far-fetched, but Sinner will give an excellent account of himself and is likely to take a set off Wawrinka.
Tip: Over 3.5 sets in the match: 17/20 (888Sport)
