Cristian Garin v Alex de Minaur Head to Head

This will be the first that the 32nd-ranked Garin and 38th-ranked de Minaur will be going up against each other at the highest level.

Career-Best Ranking for 23-Year-Old Garin

Not so long ago, less than eight months in fact, Garin was ranked 86th in the world, and even that had been a huge improvement from the 373rd rank around 12 months prior to that. Today, Garin is a seeded player at the US Open, and ranked 31st in the world, with this vast improvement having come thanks to the two titles he has won this year.

A clay-court specialist, Garin clinched his first ATP title in Houston and less than three weeks later, followed it up with another one at Munich – both on his favourite surfaces.

The good times have obviously stalled a tad thanks to the change in surfaces – first, on grass he had a 2-4 win-loss record and then followed it up with 2-3 in hard court tournaments in the lead-up to the US Open.

Even in the first round here at the US Open, he was taken to five sets by Christopher Eubanks, a player ranked 188th in the world and it would be these struggles that his Aussie opponent will be waiting on patiently.

de Minaur Has a Genuine Chance

Despite ranked lower than Garin, the Aussie isn’t that much behind and had even touched a career-best ranking of 24th in the world at one stage. And his record is in a total contrast to Garin’s when it comes to favourite surfaces.

On clay, de Minaur is 1-4 on win-loss record this season, with his only win coming at the French Open. He had three, first round losses otherwise on that surface – at Estoril, Rome and Madrid. But we digress, because the surfaces at the US Open won’t be red dirt and that should allow the Australian world number 38 to hold some edge.

After all de Minaur is coming off a title win at Atlanta, which was his second title of the year as well, following the one in Sydney earlier this season. And that is reflected in the odds on offer for both men in this encounter.

Garin v de Minaur Predictions & Tips

Despite his better ranking, Garin’s poor record on hard-court surfaces is the reason he is a whopping 23/10 to win this match as opposed to 4/11 for de Minaur’s win. This could even be a straight-setter for the Aussie.

Tip: Garin to win in three sets: 9/5 (888Sport)
