Anastasija Sevastova v Iga Swiatek Head to Head
This will be the first ever match between Sevastova and her 49th-ranked Polish opponent.
Sevastova’s Rise Despite Struggles on Hard Court
At world number 11, this is Sevastova’s career-best ranking and this comes on the back of some brilliant performances on clay. On hard court surfaces, however, things go slightly pear-shaped for the Latvian, as was evident at Toronto and Cincinnati before this tournament.
She went down in the first round at both those competitions, following on from a title triumph at Jurmala and a fourth round appearance at the French Open – both on clay. And while she did make it as far as the fourth round at the Australian Open as well, it was followed by one win apiece at the Indian Wells and Miami Open competitions.
Sevastova did dish out a convincing performance in the first round at US Open against Eugenie Bouchard, but then Bouchard has herself had a lot of struggles on the court in recent times – she has won just six of her 20 matches on hard court this season. Now, comes the real test for Sevastova.
Iga Aiming to Take on Aga’s Mantle?
Agnieszka Radwanska has been one of the biggest known tennis players from Poland but she retired from the sport last year. Aga, as she was popularly called, looks to have passed on the mantle to Iga, whose ranking has risen from nearly 900th in the world at the start of last year to a career-best 49th at the moment.
And it’s not too difficult to see why. Last year, Swiatek featured in multiple lower-level, ITF-organised tournaments, and rarely lost – finishing with a win-loss record of 43-6 over the 12 months. What that also allowed her to do was to end the year at 186th in the world and an entry into the qualifiers of the WTA circuit.
A second round appearance at the Australian Open and Budapest Open was followed by her best showing till date at Lugano. She made the final there, and in doing so earned crucial points that ensured she didn’t have to play qualifying rounds at either the French Open or the Wimbledon. At Roland-Garros came her best showing in a Grand Slam – a fourth round there – and then she made another third round appearance in Toronto.
And the manner in which Swiatek sent Ivana Jorovic packing in round one, it does look like she might be able to push her Latvian opponent here.
Sevastova v Swiatek Predictions & Tips
There’s not much to choose between these two players with Sevastova’s experience taking on Swiatek’s better showing on hard courts. Swiatek is a slight favourite at 10/11 while Sevastova starts at 1/1, and we will have to go with the bookmakers on this one – Swiatek to win it.
Tip: Swiatek to win: 10/11 (888Sport)
