Roger Federer v Damir Dzumhur Head to Head

The two players have met twice, both times in 2015 and Federer won on both occasions in straight sets. Their first meeting was on the Roland Garros clay, and that was followed a few weeks later, with a meeting on the Wimbledon grass courts.

Federer Hoping For More Disciplined Performance

Twenty-time grand slam winner Roger Federer began his US Open campaign against Indian qualifier Sumit Nagal, in what turned out to be a much tighter match than the Swiss and all his fans would have hoped for. Federer looked out of rhythm in the first set as he struggled to get his timing and serve, with a host of double faults, unforced errors and a low first serve percentage.

On the other hand, Indian Nagal displayed no signs of nerves, and strung together impressive groundstrokes, putting pressure on Federer’s game.

The Swiss was able to improve his timing as the match progressed, winning in four sets, 4-6, 6-1,6-2,6-4, despite the intermittent glitches and erratic shot-making.

Federer has not won at the US Open since 2008, after he won for a fifth consecutive time and will look to improve on his performance from the opening night, if he is to remain in contention for competing with the likes of Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic for another major title.

Can Dzumhur Put Federer Out of Rhythm?

Damir Dzumhur from Bosnia, has been on the ATP circuit for most of this decade. He was the first person from his country to win an ATP title, when he won the St. Petersburg Open in 2017. He has won two more ATP singles titles since and been ranked as high as number 23 in the world in 2018.

The Bosnian is currently ranked number 92 in the world. He has qualified for the third round on multiple occasions at each of the Australian, French, and US Open, but never made it past.

A player with solid groundstrokes, and a gritty counterpuncher, Dzumhur has not managed to maintain consistency across seasons, and has had a few different injuries that have restricted his progress on the tour.

He defeated French qualifier Elliot Benchetrit in four sets in his first round encounter here at the US Open.

Roger Federer v Damir Dzumhur Predictions & Tips

Dzumhur has been a regular hitting partner for Federer, and someone whose game the Swiss knows fairly well.

Federer starts as a very strong favorite here, but it remains to be seen what form and rhythm he is in. A repeat of the form at the beginning of his first round match my cause for a long and tight contest, not something the Swiss will like this early in the slam.

Federer looked like getting into his rhythm and playing a lot better in the third and fourth sets and he will likely be more fluent as the tournament progresses. A more fluent performance on the cards from the Swiss and a straight sets win for the making.

Tip: Federer to win in three sets: 1/3 (888Sport)
