The interesting bit about the Russian is over the last two and a half years, her ranking has always been around within the top 200 mark, reaching a career-high of 127th in the middle of 2017, and ending 2017 and 2018 at 159th and 166th respectively.
Currently, as a result of her solid showing at the Washington Open, where she had to qualify to make it to the main draw. She went on to win three matches in a row in the main draw, including those against Monica Puig and Kristina Mladenovic before bowing out in the semi-final.
In terms of points earned, that was her best result ever, and to go with her strong showing at the lower circuit, it allowed her to rise to 127th in the world. Another win here should help her break her best ever ranking on the WTA charts.
Shock Result for Kristie Ahn
Ahn, whose best ranking of 105th in the world, came at the start of 2018, has struggled to get going following that. The 27-year-old had made the main draw of Grand Slam tennis only twice before this competition – in 2018 at the Australian Open and then earlier this year at Wimbledon which means a second round appearance at the ongoing US Open makes it very special for her.
What makes it doubly special is she defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova to get to the second round, an opponent who is coming off a finals appearance at the Cincinnati Open where she defeated Sloane Stephens, Karolina Pliskova and Ash Barty.
The American had earlier made the quarter-final at the San Jose Open in what was her best ever result of the year. Can she continue with her stunning push this year and make it through to the third?
