Belinda Bencic v Alize Cornet Head to Head
Two previous matches between these two players have yielded one win apiece for both players, but it’s been nearly four years since they faced off at this level. The first time they played against each other was in 2014 at the Fed Cup and Bencic was a straight set winner but Cornet took her revenge in the first round of the 2015 Antwerp Open with a three-set win.
Bencic is Rising the Ranks Again

A semi-final at Indian Wells soon followed which consisted of wins against Naomi Osaka and Karolina Pliskova, and solid performances at Mallorca and Madrid have now seen her rise to 12th in the world. More work lies ahead of her if she wants to break into a hard-fought top-10 spot but given her first round exit at the US Open last year, any kind of deep run here this season should help her in that objective.
Cornet’s Form Has Taken a Dip
Once ranked 11th in the world, Cornet’s recent singles record hasn’t been much to write home about. After having begun the year with a semi-final at Hobart, Cornet barely got the results she would have liked and was forced to go through the qualifiers to enter the Rome Open.
At the French Open, she was ousted in round one and followed suit at Wimbledon too, which means a win in the first round of this US Open would have come as a huge relief. What should also ease the nerves is the manner of victory, a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jessica Pegula to set up this meeting with Bencic.
Unfortunately though for Cornet, her win-loss ratio is less than one for two years running now and it might be too much expect to defeat her Swiss opponent given her form.
