Rafael Nadal v Thanasi Kokkinakis Preview & Tips:
It was a straightforward first round win for Nadal, and it came against another Aussie John Millman. Now Millman has had a history, he had upset Roger Federer last US Open, so to come through unscathed against him should give Nadal a lot of confidence.
And that should be enough for him to take on Kokkinakis and breeze past him as well. The two had met one other time and Nadal had had no issues in running a straight-set winner at that 2014 Australian Open and trust him to do the same again.
Kokkinakis made the second round with a four-set win over Ilya Ivashka.
Nadal v Kokkinakis Prediction: Under 28.5 games in the match: 17/20 (888Sport)
Alexander Zverev v Frances Tiafoe Preview & Tips:
It has been that kind of a year for the German Zverev where he has been pushed hard and even knocked out early. However, with his half of the draw looking the way it is, this might be the sixth seed’s best chance to push deep into the second week of the competition.
The problems, however, persist. He needed a five-setter in the previous round, the first at the US Open this year, to get past Radu Albot. Making it worse was the fact he was leading by two sets to love at one stage and yet needed the fifth to make it to the second round.
Tiafoe would be a tougher opponent and while Zverev should still prevail, it’s tough to see him not drop a set in this one. We think there will be four sets in this match.
Zverev v Tiafoe Prediction: Four sets in the match: 9/5 (888Sport)
Naomi Osaka v Magda Linette Preview & Tips:
Sure, Osaka hasn’t been in the best of nicks and was stretched to three, gruelling sets in the first round of the competition but there were signs she was getting things together for herself in that final set. Now Linette is coming off a title win in Bronx, a new tournament that was played for the first time in the lead-up to the US Open and that’s also why the odds aren’t that heavily stacked in favour of Osaka as one would expect for the top seed.
Still, we think Osaka should win this in a hurry, winning in straight sets.
Osaka v Linette Prediction: Osaka to win in two sets: 1/1 (888Sport)
Simona Halep v Taylor Townsend Preview & Tips:
Halep was another one of those who needed to put up a spirited fight in her first round win over Nicole Gibbs, needing three sets to get past her opponent. The Wimbledon champion will now look to extend her 3-0 head to head scoreline against Townsend, who is ranked 93rd in the world and hasn’t really been very active on the WTA tour.
Expecting a straight-set win this time for Halep to march into the third.
Halep v Townsend Prediction: Halep to win in straight sets: 2/5 (888Sport)
Johanna Konta v Margarita Gasparyan Preview & Tips:
In what will be a first meeting between Britain’s Konta and Russian Gasparyan, the two will go head to head in the second round at the US Open. Konta’s form at Wimbledon and French Open was good but in more recent weeks, she looked a tad underwhelming.
However, Gasparyan’s record against top players isn’t that sparkling either so while we think there will be a fight on show, Konta should make the third round.
Konta v Gasparyan Prediction: Over 20.5 games in the match: 1/1 (888Sport)
Lucas Pouille v Dan Evans Preview & Tips:
Evans to win in four sets: 4/1 (888Sport)
Ashleigh Barty v Lauren Davis Preview & Tips:
Over 18.5 games in the match: 5/6 (888Sport)
Anna Kalinskaya v Kristie Ahn Preview & Tips:
Kalinskaya to win: 10/11 (888Sport)
