Daniil Medvedev v Feliciano Lopez Head to Head
The pair have met once before on the Spaniard’s favourite surface of clay at the Monte Carlo Masters in 2017. Lopez won their first round match then in straight sets.
Medvedev Battled Cramp to Make The Third Round
Considered as one of the dark horses for the tournament, Medvedev had a huge scare in his second round match with Bolivia’s Hugo Dellien on Thursday, when he was afflicted in a major way with cramp. So bad did it become at one stage that he could barely hobble to his chair at the change of ends, and he had to ask the ball girl to wipe the sweat off his brow with a towel, so restricted was he is his movement.
That allowed Dellien to come back into a match that Medvedev had hitherto controlled, and, at one point, it looked like the match was heading to a fifth set, or a Russian retirement.
Instead, Medvedev, in obvious pain, defied his body and, having broken Dellien eight times already in the match, summoned up his energy and focus to do it one more time in the eighth game of the fourth set, and then served out the match. He barely celebrated afterwards, so much in a hurry was he to get back to the locker room and treatment.

Lopez, Spanish Veteran Defying His Age
This is the 18th successive year that the 37-year old Spaniard has featured in the main draw at Flushing Meadows, and he continues to defy his age with performances like he has produced in the first two rounds here against much younger opponents.
In the first round he beat the highly rated young American and number 26 seed Taylor Fritz, who, having won at Eastbourne, and been the runner-up in Atlanta and Los Cabos, was tipped to do very well here this week.
Then he repeated the feat to put out the Japanese player Yoshihito Nishioka, quarter-finalist in Cincinnati, triumphing in four sets.
Lopez, who won both the singles and the doubles titles at Queen’s Club in June, yet again reminded people of the talent that has seen him win seven ATP singles and five doubles titles over his long career, and although wins do not come as frequently as they once did, on his day he is a very dangerous opponent.
Medvedev v Lopez Predictions & Tips
Medvedev is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 47/100, whilst Lopez is priced at 9/4. Lopez won their only previous encounter but that was on clay, whereas this match will take place on a hard court, where the Russian has few peers. The one impediment to a Medvedev victory may be fitness – if he fails to recover from the severe cramping he suffered in his match with Dellien, then his chances in this match and the tournament could be ended.
Tip: Medvedev to win in four sets: 16/5 (888Sport)
