Barty holds a 3-1 lead over Sakkari, defeating her twice this season already. The two ladies met as recently as the Cincinnati Open, where the young Aussie won in three sets.
Barty, Looking Clinical
Following her three-set win over Zarina Diyas in the opener, Ashleigh Barty met Lauren Davis in the second round. The number two seed looked a lot more comfortable in that fixture, as she subdued Davis in straight sets with 6-2, 7-6(2).
Looking to retake her No. 1 crown, Barty had a good run in the US Open series as she reached the semifinal in Cincinnati last week. With that, she has also won the French Open, Birmingham Classic, and Miami Open – three Premier-level and above tournaments.
Her win-loss tally, as of her recent result at the Flushing Meadows, stands at 44-8. Half of those defeats have come at the hands of the top 10 players. Moreover, there have been only two instances this entire season where Barty never made it past the third round. Truly, the 23-year-old has been in an imposing form and is improving her play by the day.
Sakkari, a Definite Threat
While Sakkari hasn’t had a season as sparkling as that of Barty’s, she will still be more than pleased with her performance. In the buildup to the US Open, she reached the quarterfinal in Cincinnati and semifinal in San Jose.
What makes her particularly dangerous is her ability to defeat top players. In Cinci, she moved past the likes of Petra Kvitova and Aryna Sabalenka while in San Jose, she defeated Elina Svitolina to reach the semis. And if these results weren’t impressive enough, Sakkari has also reached the semifinal in the Italian Open.
In many ways, this has been a breakthrough year for the Greek-woman, who won her maiden singles title in the Morocco Open. As for her performance in New York, she just defeated Shuai Peng to reach the third round.
