Svitolina’s Consistent Progression Continues
She won the 2018 WTA Tour Finals against all odds, reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open for the second consecutive year and then made it to the semifinals of Wimbledon – her first final four appearance at a Grand Slam – Elina Svitolina may have been trophy-less this season yet she has had a few accomplishments to cherish.

She has the game and looks like one of the top contenders, particularly after the way she dispatched Venus Williams in a gruelling second round match that lasted 1 hour and 51 minutes.
Svitolina raced to a 5-2 lead in the first set before the two-time U.S. Open champion brought out her A-game to test the resilience of the 24-year-old Ukrainian. The former World No. 3, however, steadied herself to take the first set 6-4, but the 39-year-old veteran responded with a barrage of winners to take a 3-0 lead in the second.
With the entire Louis Armstrong Stadium rooting for the American, Svitolina went on to do what she does best, holding nerves, digging deep, playing solid defense and forcing errors of her opponent before winning 6-4, 6-4.
Even in her first-round match against American Whitney Osuigwe, Svitolina had allowed her opponent to stage a mini fightback, before closing out the match 6-1, 7-5.
Elina will be determined not to give her compatriot any little window of opportunity in the next round that she could capitalize on.
Can Yastremska’s Aggressive Approach Help?
With two WTA singles titles this year, one in Thailand and the other in Strasbourg, and a Round of 16 appearance at Wimbledon, the 19-year-old Dayana Yastremska is being talked about as one to watch out for in future.
One of the secrets of her success has been her aggressive play and it was in full display on Thursday as she demolished Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson 6-4, 6-1 in the second round.
Having endured a tough first round against Romanian Monica Niculescu, which the Ukrainian won 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, Yastremska will be happy to have beaten Peterson without breaking a sweat, which would keep her fresh for a demanding battle against Svitolina.
