David Goffin v Pablo Carreno Busta Head to Head

The two players have met once on the clay in Portugal in 2013, which the Spaniard won in three sets. Both players’ careers have evolved significantly since.

Goffin Comeback Trail Continues to Get Stronger

David Goffin was ranked 7th in the world after being a finalist at the ATP year end finals in London in 2017, a tournament where he beat both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. 2018 and 2019 for Goffin has been a mix of recurring injuries, time off from the game and disappointing early losses at tournaments, resulting in his ranking falling to number 30 earlier this year.

Goffin is in the process of resurging his career post injuries in search of more consistent results. He was a finalist at the ATP 500 grass court tournament at Halle, losing to Roger Federer. At Wimbledon, he won a marathon fiver setter against Russian Daniil Medvedev in the third round after trailing two sets to one, before losing to eventual champion and world number one Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals.

Getting to the North American hard courts he made the finals at the ATP Master 1000 in Cincinnati before losing to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev. The Belgian has moved back into the top 20 in the ATP rankings as a result of improved performances in recent times, and is seeded 15 at the US Open.

An offensive baseliner with strong groundstrokes off both wings, a good return of serve and a solid double handed backhand, Goffin will be hoping for a good run here at the final major of the year.

His US Open campaign is off to a good start with two convincing wins against Frenchmen Gregoire Barrere and Corentin Moutet in the first two rounds.

Carreno Busta Looking to Revive 2017 US Open Run

Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta had a strong US hard court season in 2017, where he was a US Open semi-finalist, losing to Kevin Anderson. This resulted in him moving to a career high ranking of number 10 on the ATP circuit. What has followed since has been a spate of injuries, early losses and disappointments.

Carreno Busta is now ranked just outside the top 50 and looking to make a comeback from injury. The Spaniard was a qualifier at Cincinnati before defeating John Isner in the second round and running into Novak Djokovic, a match the Serb won convincingly.

The Spaniard has been stretched to four sets in both his matches but come through, against Ricardas Berankis and in form Argentine Guido Pella.

Goffin v Busta Predictions & Tips

Both players are looking at getting back to the form they displayed in 2017 and have met with success on their comeback trails. Goffin is probably further along on the comeback and will start as a favorite here.

They both have similar playing styles, gritty with solid court coverage and not ones to give up without a battle easily.

Expect a number of marathon rallies and some excellent shot making from the baseline, with Goffin winning a tough four-set duel.

Tip: Goffin to win in four sets: 16/5 (888Sport)
