Konta holds a 4-1 lead over her Chinese adversary, last defeating her in the Wuhan Open back in 2016. The duo has never met outside of the hard courts.
Konta in a Good Form
Since the start of the tournament in New York, Johanna Konta has looked quite comfortable and clinical. In what has been a solid display so far, she has knocked out Daria Kasatkina and Margarita Gasparyan without breaking a sweat. Her match against the latter was far more clinical, as she dispatched Gasparyan with 6-1, 6-0, marking one of her most efficient wins of the season.
This marks quite an impressive turnaround for the 28-year-old, who lost rather surprisingly in the first round of the Rogers Cup and Cincinnati Open. Those defeats came at the hands of low-ranked players, which only reduced her chances of a good run at the Flushing Meadows.
However, the number 16 seed didn’t let that deter her from putting up a good performance. With a quarterfinal feat in Wimbledon and the runner-up run in the Italian Open, she clearly proved her worth and staked her claim as a top player. So far in the last few months, she has defeated some big names like Petra Kvitova, Kiki Bertens, Venus Williams, Sloane Stephens, among others.
Zhang, Looking to Make Waves
Shuai Zhang, a prominent doubles player, has had a rather harrowing season on the singles circuit. With a win-loss record of 19-20, she has spent a good majority of the season in futile attempts to move past the early rounds.
In her preparations for the US Open, Zhang featured in San Jose, Rogers Cup, Cincinnati Open, and the Bronx Open. In these four outings, she managed to bag only two wins. However, right before that, she played at the SW19 where she reached the quarterfinal after defeating Caroline Wozniacki.
So far in the tournament, she has moved past Viktorija Golubic and Ekaterina Alexandrova to reach the third round.
Konta v Zhang Predictions & Tips
Zhang is certainly an experienced player and she won’t bow down to Konta without a fight. Given the form the Brit is in at the moment, she will start this match as the favourite by all means. Expect this one to be an entertaining one where Konta should come out on the top.
