Alexander Zverev v Aljaz Bedene Head to Head

The pair have met three times before, and Zverev has won on each occasion. Their first two meetings came in 2017, in Montpellier and then again in Shanghai, when Bedene had to retire with injury. Their most recent encounter came in the first round at Melbourne this year, with the German winning easily in straight sets.

Zverev, Outlasted Tiafoe to Reach Second Round

Zverev has not made it easy for himself at this year’s event so far. In his first round match against Radu Albot, he built a comfortable two set lead, only to allow the Moldovan to get back into the match and level it, before pulling away in the fifth set.

And, as if one long match was not enough for him, he followed that up with another, out-lasting the American Frances Tiafoe over five sets on Thursday.

Zverev started the match at a gallop, taking the first ten points, and soon the set followed. Tiafoe hit back, securing a vital service break in the second to draw level, only for Zverev to grab back the advantage again with a break of his own at the start of the third set to move ahead again.

However, the American then broke the German serve twice in the fourth set to force the match into a decider.

That, though, is where the German’s superior fitness prevailed. With Tiafoe struggling and needing help from the trainer, Zverev surged ahead, taking the match when the American’s forehand sailed long.

Bedene, An Unexpected Name In The Third Round Draw

Bedene does not often find himself involved in Grand Slams beyond the opening rounds. Indeed he has been beaten here in the first round in each of the past three years, and has now equalled his previous best in a Major, achieved at Roland Garros in 2016, and again at Wimbledon a year later.

The naturalised Brit, who reverted to play for his native Slovenia after he was unable to represent his adopted country in the Davis Cup, has generally had an indifferent year prior to this tournament, although he did win the Challenger event in Portoroz, Slovenia. On the senior tour, his best came in Rio where he got to the semi-finals before injury forced him to scratch.

Despite his mixed form, he has done well in New York this week, beginning with a comfortable win over Jozef Kovalik of Slovakia in three sets on Tuesday. That gave him a second round tie with the number 29 seed, Benoit Paire of France, and Bedene produced some of his best tennis of the year so far to come back to win, having been two sets down.

Zverev v Bedene Predictions & Tips

Zverev is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 1/4, whilst Bedene is priced at 7/2. The German has needed five sets to win each of his matches in Flushing Meadows so far this week, but, playing a man against whom he has a 100% winning record, he should have a much easier day this time round.

Tip:  Zverev to win in three sets: 5/4 (888Sport)
