Andy Murray’s decision to play Challenger tennis instead of accepting a wildcard at the 2019 US Open saw him win two matches at the Rafa Nadal Open but he lost his third. However, the bigger news was his defeat came at the back of an injury that caused him problems during the final set.

First, the good news though. By the looks of things, the injury did not seem like it was related to the hip he had undergone surgery for. Instead, he looked to have picked up a leg injury while making a return.
Murray, who played at the Cincinnati Masters and Winston-Salem Open but lost in round one of both those tournaments, had decided to go down a level to try and participate on the Challenger circuit. He won a couple of matches, beating Imran Sibille in the first round before overpowering Norbert Gombos in the second in straight sets.
He took a one set lead against Matteo Viola but failed to keep up with the momentum after that injury and lost the final set in a tie-breaker.
Following the injury, Murray was seen dropping on his knee and later had to stretch his left leg.
The Brit later admitted he was very exhausted and suffered cramps during his third round defeat to Viola. He said:
“I’m cramping. Very tired. I would have liked to have played more matches but it was good. I played two competitive matches. Physically I need to get better.”
