Osaka, Marching Ahead
Continuing her title defence at the Flushing Meadows, Naomi Osaka knocked out Magda Linette in the second round with 6-2, 6-4. The Japanese found her rhythm back after surviving an early scare in the first round against Anna Blinkova, where she had to struggle for three sets.
The 21-year-old Osaka shot to prominence last season when she won the US Open title. Now, she faces a player who is looking to walk in her path, only a few years earlier.
The top seed has been in a pretty remarkable form for most of this season. Having won the Australian Open, she cemented her position in the top three and later continued to reach the latter stages in big tournaments. At the same time, she went through a small slump as well – something that can be chalked off to her growing up as a player on the WTA Tour.
In the preparation for the US Open, she played in the Rogers Cup and Cincinnati Open, reaching the quarterfinal on both the instances. As a hard-hitter, she has been more than dominating in most of her matches although, she still has a room for error which is capitalized on by her opponents.
Gauff, Looking to Make History
Having turned pro just last season, Cori Gauff has already achieved a lot as a player. In this year’s Wimbledon, she reached the fourth round as a qualifier after defeating Venus Williams. Apart from that, she has been working hard on the ITF circuit as well to build her form.
Now, in the US Open where she got a wildcard entry into the main draw, she has already defeated Anastasia Potapova and Timea Babos to reach the third round. By doing so, she has become the youngest player since 1996 to achieve this feat.
Despite her heroics, she still has a long way to go and a lot to learn. This clash against Osaka will be a good learning opportunity for World No. 140 and it will be intriguing to see how she fares here.
Osaka v Gauff Predictions & Tips
Osaka will start this game as the favourite to win. However, Gauff will challenge her and given her energy and ferocity, it will be a good game. We can expect the young American to snatch some games off Osaka although, going the distance is a long shot here.
