Kei Nishikori v Alex de Minaur Head to Head
These two have never played each other at the highest level.
Mixed Start for Nishikori
It’s been a curious start for the Japanese number one this competition. He was leading Marco Trungelliti, his first round opponent, by a set and 4-1 in the second when he retired from the match. This was followed by what could have been a straightforward win against Blaz Klahn but for a blip in the second set. In the end, Nishikori won it in four.
What makes this bit of a surprising US Open series though is what happened before the final major. Nishikori, who has enjoyed a good time on hard courts and more so during the US Open series, fell in the first match he played at both, the Montreal Masters and the Cincinnati Open.
This came at the end of a good season otherwise, that saw him make it to the quarter-final at each of the three Grand Slams before the US Open. Can he continue to push on and make it four in a row? He sure will need to shrug off his performances since Wimbledon if he wants to do that.

De Minaur Emulating Last Year’s Showing
Much like last year, Aussie world number 38 has made it to the third round yet again. And coincidentally, like last year, the Australian has dropped one set in getting this far but is meeting a stronger, seeded opponent in the third round. What makes the coincidence slightly spookier is Marin Cilic, his third round opposition in last year’s US Open was seeded seventh, same as Nishikori.
De Minaur did push Cilic to five sets in that match before going down but he has another chance to erase those memories and move forward. And what he does have going for him is his showing on hard courts this year, which has seen him win two titles; one at Sydney and the other at Atlanta.
This is also why a Nishikori win isn’t a foregone conclusion and one might see a tough, gritty battle for a place in the fourth round.
Nishikori v de Minaur Predictions & Tips
Yep, it won’t as straightforward as Nishikori winning in straight sets, which is also reflected in the odds with the Japanese starting off at 4/7 to win as compared to 81/50 for a De Minaur win. In going with our list of coincidences above, we could see another five-setter in this one.
Tip: Five sets in the match: 5/2 (888Sport)
