Matteo Berrettini v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

Berrettinin and Popyrin have no previous history.

Lack Of Matches Not Affecting Berrettini

Matteo Berrettini arrived in New York with just one competitive match under his belt since reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon.

He pulled out of Gstaad where he was the defending champion due to a right ankle injury he suffered on a practice court. The aforementioned injury deterred his participation at the Rogers Cup where he skipped the event altogether, and only played one match in Cincinnati, losing to Juan Ignacio Londero in straight sets.

However, Berrettini has not let fitness and injury conerns affect his performances during the first week of the 2019 US Open as he served his way to the third round at Flushing Meadows for the first time. The powerful Italian thwarted Richard Gasquet in the opening round in four sets, racking up 19 aces and only broken twice in the match. It was the same old story in his second round match against Australia’s Jordan Thompson where he established his dominance in four sets as well.

The 23-year-old is currently his country’s second best player in terms of rankings (second only to Fognini), and has won 31 matches this season. Should he beat the talented Australian youngster Alexei Popyrin in the third round, he could be scaling up the heights of a Top 20 ranking when the new rankings are released after the tournament.

Popyrin Equals Best Ever Appearance At A Major

Australia’s young gun Alexei Popyrin has equaled his career-best appearance at a Grand Slam with his stunning upset over Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin in the second round. Popyrin had also reached the third round at his home Slam in Melbourne earlier this year.

It has been a steady rise for the 20-year-old who was ranked outside the world’s Top 600 just over 18 months ago. But he broke into the Top 150 towards the last quarter of 2018 after capturing his maiden ATP Challenger title in Jinan, China and making a handful of main-draw appearances.

Popyrin’s remarkable progress in the span of one year is something to admire, considering he won his maiden match at tour-level in October last year. The Sydney native was a junior French Open champion in 2017 and he moves very well for a man of his stature.

Popyrin, like Berrettini, has a booming first serve and genuine weapons off both wings from the baseline.

Berrettini v Popyrin Predictions & Tips

This will be a serving feast. There is parity in the service departments and this will likely be decided by a few points, potentially in a tiebreak. I don’t think Berrrettini will be concerned by his fitness levels, but he could be forced into some pressure situations in this one. If Popyrin wins here, we should not term it as an upset as the conditions technically suit his game.

Tip: Popyrin to win: 11/5 (888Sport)
