Australian Open Semi-Finalist Mertens on the Charge
Belgium’s Elise Mertens, who caught the eye with her stunning run to the semifinals of the Australian Open in 2018, has looked in good touch at the U.S. Open so far, not expending a lot of energy in dispatching Switzerland’s Jill Teichmann 6-2, 6-2 in the first round and Czech Republic’s Krystina Pliskova 6-2, 6-2 in the second.
The 23-year-old, who was beaten by Sloane Stephens in the fourth round at Flushing Meadows last year, will be looking to better or, at least, equal that performance this year.
The season has already been a productive one for Mertens, who claimed her first Premier title in Doha, wining the Qatar Open by beating Kiki Bertens, Angelique Kerber and Simona Halep (all top 10 players) in the quarterfinals, semifinals and final respectively.
A prominent doubles player, Mertens, alongwith partner Aryna Sabalenka, also won back-to-back doubles titles at Indian Wells and Miami. Later the duo also reached the semifinals of the French Open.
The Belgian, who has struggled with consistency in singles ever since the victory in Doha, will be looking to keep the rhythm going against the World No. 88 Andrea Petkovic.

Petkovic Pulls off a Big Upset
Petkovic came into the U.S. Open with not much expectations having just 8 main draw victories this season. But she has been extremely impressive in New York so far, having knocked out No. 6 Petra Kvitova 6-4, 6-4 in the second round.
Kvitova, still recovering from a forearm injury, was also beaten by the same opponent in the first round of the Australian Open last year.
A former French Open semifinalist, Petkovic, who began the U.S. Open campaign with straight sets win over Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnescu, will be buoyed after her stunning performance against Kvitova and will look to take that confidence into the match against Mertens with hopes of advancing further.
