Novak Djokovic v Stan Wawrinka Head to Head

The pair have played each other no fewer than twenty four times before, with Djokovic leading their personal head to head series by 19 matches to 5. Those looking for encouragement for Wawrinka, though, can take solace that their last meeting came in the final of this tournament three years ago, which the Swiss player won.

No Sign of Injury Recurrence for Djokovic in Third Round Win

Djokovic cruised into the fourth round with an easy three set win over the American world number 111 Denis Kudla. He broke his opponent’s serve four times, and saved all seven of the break points that he faced, to make the fourth round here yet again.

Most importantly for his chances of winning his 17th Grand Slam, and fourth title here in New York, he showed no signs of the shoulder injury that had so bothered him in his previous match against the Argentine Juan Ignacio Longero, and which he had been feeling in the two weeks running up to this tournament.

The defending champion has yet to drop a set at Flushing Meadows so far this year and is looking in ominous form, as far as his main rivals are concerned.

Wawrinka Ends Dreams of Italian Lucky Loser

Wawrinka won the title here in 2016, one of his three Grand Slam victories in all, and he has a good overall record at Flushing Meadows, having twice been a semi-finalist here, and reaching the quarter-final in 2010.

In recent years, though, he has been plagued by injuries, and has missed a lot of tennis, exacerbating the problem by trying to come back to the game too soon, by his own admission.

He has played relatively sparingly this year, with his best result coming in Rotterdam, where he lost in the final to Gael Monfils. He also got to the quarter finals in Madrid and at Roland Garros, where he was beaten by Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer respectively.

This week he has progressed almost unnoticed to the fourth round. He began his campaign with a stuttering four set win over the qualifier and world number 111, Jannik Sinner of Italy, and then had another four set victory over the experienced French player Jeremy Chardy.

He then ended the hopes of Italian Paolo Lorenzi, who had aspirations of becoming the first lucky loser to make the fourth round of the US Open since 1982. Wawrinka was not at his best – he made 50 unforced errors, and converted only a third of the break points he earned – but he still had too much guile and craft for his inexperienced opponent.

Djokovic v Wawrinka Predictions & Tips

Djokovic is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 2/9, whilst Wawrinka is priced at 50/13. The Swiss player did beat Djokovic the last time they met, and he has a good record against the Serb in Grand Slams. But all that was three years ago and more, before injury problems intervened. Djokovic is playing near the top of his game and, in this type of form, is virtually unbeatable.

Tip: Djokovic to win in three sets: 1/1 (888Sport)
