Djokovic, who had issues with his should even in his second round win against Juan Ignacio Londero, was 1-2 down in the third set after having lost the first two sets, when he finally called it off. Wawrinka, who has beaten Djokovic multiple times before including the 2016 US Open final, will now take on Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals.
The struggle was on from the very beginning with the Serb starting off with a double-fault in his very first service game before he was broken in the fifth game of the opening set. Djokovic had two chances to break immediately back but missed both of them to allow Wawrinka to go 4-2 up and held serve comfortably after that to win the set.

Predictably, the world number one and defending champion roared back into the encounter with an early break of serve to take a 3-0 lead in the second set. Back to back holds from Wawrinka narrowed the gap down to 4-2 but things started to go very wrong for Djokovic in the seventh game when he double-faulted twice and soon faced two break-points.
Wawrinka missed one but converted the second one before holding serve to level things off at 4-4. A couple more holds later, Djokovic fell behind 0-30 for the second time in the set, and then faced two more break-points. Wawrinka needed no second invites and converted again before serving it out to lead by two sets to zilch.
And when three games into the third set, Djokovic was broken again, the Serb decided to call it quits, losing from a Grand Slam at the earliest stage since the 2018 Australian Open, following which he won four Grand Slam titles before the US Open.
