Gael Monfils v Pablo Andujar Head to Head
This will be the fourth meeting between the two, with the Frenchman having a 100 percent record so far. However, the last of their previous three meetings came a long time back in Nice in 2013.
Monfils Survives Shapovalov Test
Gael Monfils began the tournament with a straightforward three-set win over Albert Ramos Vinolas, and he didn’t waste much time in the second round either, breezing past Romania’s Marius Copil 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
Up next was the 20-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov who himself had stormed into the third round without dropping a set. The game between the left-handed NextGen star and the experienced 33-year-old was expected to be a cracker and it did live up to the billing.
It took three hours and 35 minutes of breathtaking tennis to separate the two, with the Frenchman ending the Canadian’s resistance to win the engrossing contest 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3.
Monfils, who saw off a tough field to win the title at Rotterdam earlier this year, had made it to the semifinals of the U.S. Open in 2016, when he was defeated by Novak Djokovic. One of the most athletic players in the world, Monfils is yet to feature in a Grand Slam final. And this year’s U.S. Open presents him with the best opportunity to realize that unfulfilled dream.
The 33-year-old, known to play an entertaining brand of tennis, is the highest seeded player still alive in his quarter of the draw and if he can maintain the energy and momentum he could go a long way. But first he will have to deal with Spain’s Andujar, who has been in a decent touch in the tournament.

Andujar’s Best Grand Slam Showing So Far
Having endured a tough five-set victory in the first round against No. 30 Kyle Edmund, of England, the 33-year-old Spaniard notched up a couple of straight-set wins against Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in the second round and Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in the third to advance to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.
The World No. 70, who had undergone three elbow surgeries between 2016 and 2017, had reportedly toyed with the idea of retiring before making a comeback to the sport. And it has been quite a comeback for the Spaniard as he has jumped from being outside the top 1,800 in the rankings in early 2018 to being the No. 70 in the world.
Ever since his return, Andujar has won an ATP 250 series title in Marrakech (which came last year), along with 6 Challenger events. With the U.S. Open throwing in a lot of surprises and Andujar in the middle of a decent comeback on the tour, the Spaniard would like to extend his stay in New York, at least by one more day.
Gael Monfils v Pablo Andujar Predictions & Tips
Despite his stamina-sapping third-round win against Shapovalov, Monfils’s athleticism and experience will come in handy against Andujar. The Frenchman will be favourite to win this in a closely fought three sets.
Tip: Over 33.5 games in the match: 4/6 (888Sport)
